Photos of street scenes in Gurna

It seems the residents of Old Gurna acquired a reputation for looting the tombs that are scattered in the mountainsides around them, some that are literally right under their homes. So the government built New Gurna and tried to move the people there. But most refused to go.

If you want to buy alabaster, Gurna is probably as good a place as any. If you walk the back streets of Gurna, you'll find slabs of alabaster and shards everywhere. You can also find workers actively carving various objects. My guess is you could buy directly from them and save money while also providing higher profits to the craftsmen.

These large awkward water jugs can be found throughout Gurna and many Egyptian villages.

Camels are used extensively for hauling papyrus and providing transportation. This one was photographed on the west bank, south of Gurna.
