When I wandered through old Gurna, much of it seemed deserted, making me wonder
if the government had succeeded in moving people to New Gurna. But there were
people still here, with goats and donkeys. It's good for the goats if their
reputation for eating anything is true because there's not much to graze on
here.

with mud bricks. It's dangerous during the very rare rainfall.
The inhabitants of Old Gurna have acquired a reputation for looting tombs.
Their homes in the hills are surrounded by tombs, probably many that have
only been found so far by the locals themselves.
A view from the hills in Old Gurna to give just an inkling of how the hills
are sprinkled with tombs.
These large awkward water jugs can be found throughout Gurna and many
Egyptian villages.
