Hatshepsut was the only woman to reign over Egypt as pharoah. Her reign lasted from 1503BC to 1482BC. Deir el-Bahri is the Arabic name for her mortuary temple. However, she herself called it the Djeser Djeseru, the "Splendor of Splendors". After her death, her image was defaced by Tuthmosis III, with whom she shared Egyptian rule until she claimed herself pharoah by devine intervention.

Deir el-Bahri has a scenic setting, surrounded by vertical cliffs that make a kind of natural amphitheatre.

Deir el-Bahri is built on a couple of levels. Its symmetry gives it a pleasant, almost modern appearance.

The stonework here is all cleanly executed and precise.

I particularly liked this sculpture, which felt particularly life-like and I tried to imagine the beautiful young woman that might've served as the model .
