Photos of the pyramids of Giza

The second largest of the Giza Pyramids is the Pyramid of Chephren (Khafre). The Pyramid of Chephren sits on higher ground than the Great Pyramid and also has steeper sides, so actually looks larger. It is also distinctive, due to the fact that it retains some of the limestone cover stones near its top. In height, it is only 10 feet shorter than the Great Pyramid and 46 feet shorter on each side.

From the desert southwest of the pyramids it's possible to get an overview of all three of the major pyramids of Giza.

Riding up to this vantage point at sunset seems to be a popular activity for the local Egyptians. There were literally hundreds of horseback riders making this trip, first through the sidestreets of Giza and then into the desert sands around the pyramids.

During the daytime, the pyramids are surrounded by a cast of characters, each seeking baksheesh in their own way.

At various times the sphinx has been buried by desert sand. The surrounding level of sand is about 20 feet above the base of the current excavation.
